Cape Cod Trekkers Have an Easy Day to Shawne Crowell State Forest

Today the coolest thing we saw was the Bourne Bridge. After leaving Myles Standish State Forest this morning we biked through tons of small towns with tons of American flags and cool cars that were out for Fourth of July. We saw Porsches, Audi TT, and some old cars. After stopping at a bike shop and tightening some loose ends, we biked along the Cape Cod Canal which was gorgeous and blessedly flat. We're almost to camp, where we'll get a pizza delivery and find a beach to watch the fireworks.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Bid Farewell to Canada and Re-enter Washington State

In Victoria, seagulls and pigeons serve as the honorary replacements for the songbirds and crows of California. Waking up at 4:30 AM to catch a 6:00 ferry to Port Angeles back in Washington, we were crudely seen off by an orchestra of dissonant squawks and coos. Our next stop was Safeway, where we shopped for the next six meals worth of food. In preparation for Tuesday night's dinner, we brought along a cut of sirloin beef, a truly grave mistake. The packaging burst open on the way up to Heart 'o the Hills, our final destination for the night, soaking Koby's gear in a bloody mess of cow entrails. It didn't help that we were biking up a 5-mile incline to a base camp tucked away in the mountains of Olympic National Park. To date, that steady climb was easily the most difficult challenge our group has faced and overcome over the course of the trip. I rewarded myself with a five hour nap to compensate for my early rising. Apparently, everybody had a blast hiking.

NY-Montreal Trekkers Begin Their Long Journey up the Hudson River

The NY-Montreal Trekkers had an eventful first day.  Our ride up the Saw Mill River Bikeway was full of rolling hills and beautiful scenery.  We past the new Tappan Zee Bridge and headed into Croton Pt. Campground with plenty of time to cook a delicious dinner of mac & cheese and hot dogs.  After dinner we biked out to Croton Point to see fireworks over the Hudson.  A great first day!

Across America Trekkers Visit the Adventure Cycling Association Office

Today the Across America Trekkers covered some serious ground. Despite the time change after crossing into Montana, they hit the road early today and crossed through Missoula, where thy stopped at the Adventure Cycling Office. There, they visited the same spot that over 1,200 cyclists stop at each year to grab an ice cold drink and learn about different route options. The group had their photo taken and posted on the wall next to the photos of all the other cyclists who have stopped through in 2017. After grabbing a bite in Missoula, they pressed on for 12 final miles and ended their day at a campsite in Turah, MT.

Today we started from Wompatuck State Park, it wasn't as difficult as we thought even though it was a 33+ mile day. It was awesome when people were kind and generous and let us use their hoses for water. It's so cool when we stop and people tell us their stories about when they used to bike tour, it's really encourages everyone and it's cool that adults are impressed with us when we tell them what we're doing! We accidentally kicked a ball into a fire last night, which became the evening entertainment as we watched it sadly deflate. NEW YORK-MONTREAL TREK - First Day

Anxious bikers assembled this morning in Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan at 8 a.m. for the beginning of their 16 day, 400+ mile adventure up the Hudson Valley, through the Adirondacks, cornering Vermont, and into Quebec, Canada to Montreal.  The adventure started with a short train ride out of NYC with all their bikes and equipment to Dobbs Ferry.  There several more Trekkers joined the group and they played some ice-breaker games, talked about bike safety & rules of the road and then headed north along the Saw Mill River Bike Trail.  Today they have an easy 20 mile ride to Croton Point Park Campground on the Hudson River.

Across America Trekkers Enter Montana

Today the Across America Trekers logged 75 miles, starting in Pinehurst, Idaho, and ending in Saint Regis, Montana. Today marked not only a new state, but also a new time zone! They climbed the steep I-90 grade to Lookout Pass and got Oreo ice cream at the top (also the state line) to celebrate. Nice work!

A Much Needed Rest Day in Victoria, BC for Pacific Northwest Trekkers

We enjoyed a laid back morning at the hostel full of pool games and good laughs. We later explored a market containing a variety of international local vendors and satisfied our curiosities with a "shrub" drink (it's okay—not what it sounds like) and delicious maple cookies. Growing hungrier by the minute, we bought lunch and ate it over an intense card game in the park. Towards the end of the day, we wandered through a beautiful castle and ate a crazy good dinner at El Furniture Warehouse. Now, everyone is psyched to get to Olympic and experience what a national park has to offer!

60 Mile Ride From Vancouver to Victoria for the Pacific Northwest Trekkers

Today was our longest day with a 60 mile ride from Vancouver to Victoria.  The morning was hard with a strong head wind but it was made better by a bald eagle sighting.  After a long ferry ride we took a nice bike path to our hostel.  We were delighted to see Harlan as we arrived.  We ate some delicious pizza and went to bed. Happy Canada Day!

CAPE COD TREK - First Day

Trekkers met this morning in Boston for their 14 day, 250+ mile adventure out to the tip of Cape Cod. After a brief train ride from Boston to North Scituate on the MBTA commuter line the bikers will have a picnic lunch and get to know each other playing some ice-breaking games.  After a talk about bike safety and rules of the road the group will bike 7 miles to Wompatuck State Park campground.  Over the next 2 weeks the group will visit Plymouth Rock, Martha's Vineyard, Hyannis, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown, ending with a day in historic, trendy Boston.

Cruising Across Idaho the Across America Trekkers Ride 83 Miles Today.

The Across America Trekkers did their longest mileage yet today: 83 miles! They coasted smoothly along bike path in Idaho following route I-90. They had time to stop for a nice picnic lunch where they used the swings and took a nap, and for ice cream on the way to their campsite in Pinehurst, ID. They plan to cross the border into Montana some time tomorrow morning!

Idaho Mountains Provide Beautiful Scenery for Across America Trekkers

Today the Trekers did an awesome job on some really tough hills as they moved through the Rocky Mountains! The ride was tough but the views sure were beautiful. They also met some really nice locals from Idaho, one of whom says he is in touch with Savannah Guthrie and plans to put them on the Today Show when they arrive in New York.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Enjoy Leisurely Day in Vancouver, BC

This morning we were afforded a leisurely 8:30 wake up in the first beds that we have slept in for a while. The Samesun Hostel provided a luxurious breakfast of bagels and muffins, followed by the first modern laundry of the trip. After a relaxing morning we kickstarted our activities with a Greek lunch. After getting our bikes from the hostel we took some very light bikes to Granville Island. The island had an awesome market which was fun to just explore and walk around  while also observing street performers. We went from Granville to Stanley Park, where we found the Lost Lagoon and curved frisbees around trees. We topped the day off with some modified Buffalo mac & cheese. Tomorrow we look forward to our longest ride of 55 miles, arriving in Victoria, and being in Canada for Canada Day.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Find Vancouver Awesome!

Today began with a 12 mile ride to catch a bus into Vancouver. We were all super excited to reach Canada. When we got to Vancouver and reassembled the bikes, we sat down for a delicious lunch in a park with views of the distant sky scrapers. Koby rejoined us after taking care of Harlan after his spill the day before. We were glad to be reunited. We biked through the futuristic city to Samesun Hostel. After relaxing in our room for a bit, we ended our night by going out for some delicious Chinese food.

Beautiful Scenery Surround Across America Trekkers as they Cross Idaho

The Across America Trekers logged 50 miles today. They traveled along Route 12 in Idaho with steep sweeping mountains to their right and the beautiful Clearwater River to their left the whole way.  The Trekers are looking forward to logging a good chunk of mileage tomorrow as they make their way to Missoula over the next few days.

Across America Trek Enters Idaho

Today the Trekkers on Across America said goodbye to Washington and Hello to Idaho! They woke up on a beautiful farm property and started the day early, stopping for a lunch break in the little town of Pomeroy, Washington. They got to their hotel in Lewiston, Idaho around 4:30 and went out for pizza to celebrate their arrival in a new state.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Almost Reach Bellingham, WA

Today as we were leaving Burlington, WA, Harlan took a spill. While nonchalantly looking back, he ran into a pole and cut his leg, requiring stitches. We took him to the ER and he quickly regained his spirits. We then left Harlan to the friendly hospital staff and went to a bike shop. After some much needed repairs we returned to the pizza place that we enjoyed so much yesterday. Biking at a stellar pace, we proceeded to the campground and biked up a stunning mountain. We ate delicious burgers, hand-formed and cooked by Aaron and Jonah, and debriefed before having s'mores and a sing-along by the fire. Besides Harlan's forces hiatus it was a successful day.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Biking Beautiful Northwest Washington Coast

Tuesday we woke up early to make an 11:30 ferry, or so we thought. Koby had told us it was at 11:30 when it was really at 12:30. Ironically, we had all suggested during the morning's ride that Koby employ this strategy in the future. We rode the ferry leaving Orcus Island and crossed islands on a bridge treating us to views of a wetland on one side and factories on the other. We are at a pizza chain that economically really needs to spread into more major areas, and was frankly delicious. We biked around looking for a feasible campground because the planned state park was up a mountain and it was getting a bit late to summit the peak. We ended up at a quaint motel and spent the night, after biking five miles that took us right back to the motel near the pizza place.

Across America Trekkers Getting into the Biking Groove

Today the trekers biked to Dayton, Washington where they are camping on a farm under a sky full of stars. They logged about seventy miles today, stopping for a lunch break in the quaint town of Walla Walla Washington, famous for its sweet onions. They're getting into groove of early bedtimes and early wake ups, looking to bike into Lewiston, Idaho tomorrow!

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Day Off on Orcus Island

Monday was not only our first opportunity to kick our feet onto the metaphorical coffee table, but our first chance to scrub out our reeking apparel. Concentrated camping soap and lake water has made me miss loading the washing machine. On another note,  it was a treat to eat a hearty breakfast of dry Cheerios at 11 AM rather than 6.  Over the course of Sunday, we splurged a bit on group canoeing— we had a fantastic time gliding over the tranquil waters at Moran State Park.  Great conversations, group bonding, and ice cream ensued.  Personally, I went with raspberry ripple. No regrets. Soon after, our group split up. Nadia, Harlan and Aimee bravely ventured out to the other side of a daunting mountain. Meanwhile,  Koby, Cole, Mike, Jonah, and myself went on an intense trek to Sunrise Rock.  Mountain baseball was played with a log and pinecones. Unfortunately, nobody managed to hit one into the lake. By the time we returned Harlan, Nadia and Aimee were nowhere to be seen. We assumed that they were food shopping miles away from our campsite.  To our surprise, they returned it only minutes later, bearing a $16 monster of a rice crispy treat, which the nine of us decimated within minutes.  I nearly forgot to mention that they snatched a horde of s'mores supplies. Good times.
