Cape Cod Trekkers Enjoy Provincetown

We learned yesterday that Provincetown is an incredibly colorful place, from its natural beauty to its history and culture.
Our day began winding through the sand dunes at Beech Forest and the Cape Cod National Seashore. We rode the Dunes Edge Bike Trail up to Race Point Beach, where we watched powerful waves hit the shore. We also got great views of several seals swimming close to the beach. They looked like they were enjoying themselves in their habitat, as we were enjoying ourselves trying to outrun the waves as they crashed up onto the beach before retreating back into the Atlantic Ocean. Feeling the saltwater mist on our skin as we bared our toes in the sand was a feeling we won't soon forget.
From there, we went made a quick stop at Bennett Pond, which was covered in lily pads and water lilies.
After riding the entire bike trail in a loop, we made a short trek into town to eat lunch just off Commercial Street at the Mayflower Compact memorial. We indulged in a short after-lunch siesta in the sun. After locking up the bikes, we took a walk down Commercial Street and popped in and out of town hall, various shops, a local artist's craft fair and small art galleries.
With lemonade and iced coffees in hand, we climbed to the top of Pilgrim Monument and explored the Provincetown Museum -- were invited to share in a spread of appetizers for an exhibit opening -- and learned about whaling history, the voyage and landing of the Mayflower, and the town's diverse past.
After a busy day about town, we went back to nature and cooked a sunset spaghetti dinner atop the sand dunes. As twilight settled, we heard a chorus of waves crashing in the distance and coyotes howling, signaling it was time to get back to camp.
We left the dunes knowing our trip was winding down, and the next day we'd be back in Boston, where our odyssey began.

Team Bonding With the California Trekkers

What does one do after a long day of biking in California? Well, you find the nearest strawberry field and go to town, of course! The Trekkers found that the best way to end their strawberry feast was with a good round of the Ha Ha game. More on their adventures soon...

C&O Canal Trek's First Day on the Road

The C&O Canal Trip kicked off its first real day of biking yesterday. It was a day full of getting used to the bikes and of meaningful conversations between the group members and with the many people that the group encountered along the way. The locals were full of great tips about what to explore in the area. Whitewater rafting is definitely on the top of the list of things to do. The group also cooked its very first meal together (quesadillas!) at their campground in Boston, PA, which was a huge milestone because none of the Trekkers had had any prior experience in the kitchen. They also built their first fire, which was an experience in and of itself. Overall, the Trekkers' spirits are high and are looking forward to a great day of whitewater rafting today!

Meet Our Leaders: Tyler

Hey everyone! I'm Tyler, and I'm excited to once again be leading with Teen Treks this summer!  I can't wait to be out on the road leading another Teen Trek!  I've traveled by bus with a backpack through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Israel/Palestine but by far my favorite way to travel is by bicycle ... sometimes its best to travel 10 miles an hour and take in the fragrance of spring wild flowers or maybe the wonderfully potent smells of a Vermont dairy.  I've traveled many miles by bicycle with Teen Treks as a trekker (my favorite trip was the Across America Trek) and I am returning for my third summer as a Teen Treks leader.  Although I spend as much time as possible on my bike, I also enjoy playing music (I've recently taken up learning accordion), hiking, camping, eating ice cream, and dreaming about the next outdoor adventure.  I can't wait to meet all of the 2015 leaders and trekkers!

Meet Our Program Cordinator: Deion

Hi Trekkers! Here's Deion, a program coordinator for Teen Treks this summer. He loves to travel, used to be a flight attendant and teach English in France, try new recipes, and play and watch tennis. The other day he rode a bike for the first time in over six years--and he's loving it! Feel free to call the office or send him questions at teentreks@gmail.com

Meet Our Leaders: Jamie

Hey everyone!

My name is Jamie Sunshine from Buffalo, New York!  When it’s not snowing here, I ride my bike whenever I can.  In addition to biking, I have many hobbies including camping, hiking, swimming, jet skiing, boating, scuba diving, dog walking, “Frisbee-ing” (ultimate, disc golf and Kan Jam), traveling, playing music and being outdoors.  Leading a bike trip is something I’ve always wanted to do because it’s the best way to experience the world and meet new people all at the same time!

I recently just finished my Masters degree in music playing percussion in the beautiful state of West Virginia (WVU).  Throughout my time in school I was lucky to enough to help lead a group and study music and dance in Ghana, West Africa.  In addition to Africa, I have traveled to many places including Europe, Israel, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, The Cayman Islands, Alaska and Hawaii!  I can’t wait to meet everyone and get started on our biking adventures!

Meet Our Leaders: Lydia

Hello to you all! My name is Lydia, and I could not be more psyched to begin this wild summertime adventure. I am a born and raised Buffalonian who has since left to explore the rest of the world. I currently live in NYC, where I attend college and earn a living by co-managing a hostel in Brooklyn. I've made it a point to never stop exploring, and I hope you will too by the end of this summer! I've been on countless adventures-- from living in Brazil for a year, to working at a sleep-away camp in Portugal, to hiking and camping around Iceland in the cold of early spring, to canoeing through the Canadian wilderness for weeks on end--each one as incredible as the next. My bike has been my constant companion no matter where I go and I firmly believe there is no greater sensation than feeling the road fall away behind you and knowing that you are the force behind it. So, here's to a summer of adventure and endless thrills!

Meet Our Leaders: Stephanie

I am Stephanie from Albany, New York. After graduating college in 2013 I moved to Philadelphia to coach, mentor and tutor middle and high school students. After living in a large city for two years I am ready to get nature back into my life. I have traveled to Canada, Australia and many different states here in our own backyard. I love being outdoors, biking, hiking, camping, running, playing sports and practicing yoga. I cannot wait to meet all of you and start this journey together.

Meet Our Leaders: Eian

What's up Teen Trekkers, My name is Eian and I'm from Cleveland, Ohio but have been living in Brooklyn, NY for the past year or so working in journalism. The city is great but I'm looking forward to hitting the open road and having some adventures this summer! I've always been an active type, and apart from biking some of my favorite things to do are running, lifting, and playing soccer and rugby. Before moving to New York I spent a year teaching music and soccer in Israel and have been lucky enough to travel to some pretty cool places around the world. This summer though, I'm excited to explore the US with you all and encounter it from the wholly immersive vantage point that you can only get atop a bike. See you on the road!

Meet Our Leaders: Skylar

Hi Everybody! My name is Skylar I live in Baltimore Maryland, and just graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After having spent all winter cooped up in my studio sculpting I cannot wait to get out on the road! I have been riding a bike for about as long as I have been walking and I can’t think of a more fun and relaxing way to explore new places! I am looking forward to seeing new sights, spending some time out in nature, enjoying a good camp fire, and getting to share the experience!
Last year I spent all spring and summer working on an urban farm in Baltimore. Part of my job while I was there was to work with the high schoolers and other volunteers that came through the farm. So I spent a lot of time encouraging people to try things that were new to them and got some good practice in handling even the crabbiest, tiredest, and dirtiest of teens. Over all it was a great summer and I loved helping people learn about where their food comes from and how to help it grow. When I was in high school I took two trips with Teen Treks, both of which were amazing. Most recently since then I have hiked the Devils Path, a trail through the Catskill mountain range, and taken a combination bike and train trip out west to New Mexico, Arizona, and California. When I’m not out on an adventure (or finishing college!) I spend my time, making artwork, enjoying music, reading, and farming.

Meet our Leaders: John

Hi there trekkers! I’m John from Montclair, New Jersey.  I couldn’t be more thrilled to meet you and explore the open road! This is my first year leading with Teen Treks but I know how much fun you’ll have because I went on three Teen Trek trips when I was in high school. I’ve biked along the coast of New England and from New York City to Montreal and it’s all been a blast. I graduated in May from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and I want to teach high school English. At Vassar I ran the Bike Shop, so I like to fix bikes as well as ride them. When I'm not riding or fixing bikes, I also love working with students, drawing, reading, making music, camping, hiking, cooking, and having imaginative conversations. I can’t wait to begin our journey!

Meet our Leaders: Sarah

Hello all!
My name is Sarah and I grew up on the Long Island Sound in Branford, CT. I am very excited to get outside and lead Trekkers on wonderful adventures this summer! Some of my past adventures include bike touring across Montana, trekking up to 18,000 ft in Nepal, and herding goats in the Swiss Alps. I enjoy all different kinds of adventures, whether it is getting deep into the backcountry in a canoe or exploring the streets of a new city. I am often found running, skiing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. I studied geography as an undergraduate student at the University of Vermont (UVM) and will be pursuing a graduate degree in public health this fall. Throughout college I led students on Outing Club trips and I also led our wilderness orientation program for three years. I can’t wait to be out on the road with you Trekkers!

2014: Another Great Summer of Biking!

We're closing out another fantastic season!  This summer, our Treks brought together kids from all over the US, plus Europe and Asia, for biking adventures they'll never forget.  They visited lively cities and small towns --

-- and got out in lots of wide-open spaces:

They camped out together,

cooked out together,

learned how to fix their own bikes out on the road,

devoured gallon after gallon of ice cream,

and made lots of close friendships:

They hiked and biked through stunning wilderness spots --

 -- and breezy beaches,

stopping along the way to learn about local history,

pick up lunch goodies at farms,

get off their bikes and out on the water,

and check out museums, art, comedy shows, music festivals, thrift shops, and pretty much everything else they could pack into each day.  They biked hundreds of miles together, up hills and down them, on bright, sunny days and through the rain.  Not a lot of kids can say they've accomplished these kinds of things, but every one of our Trekkers can!

We'll post our 2015 trip schedule later this year, so you can start planning your Trek for next summer.  See you then!

Maine Coast Trekkers Complete 400+ Mile Adventure

The last day of biking turned out beautiful for the Maine Coast Trekkers.  They enjoyed a ride through beautiful hills with almost no traffic.  Before checking into their hotel in Bangor, they picnicked on the banks of the Penobscot River and visited the Cole Land Transportation Museum, which had a great exhibit on biking.

At a bakery they'd found earlier in the day, the Trekkers had picked up some mixed berry pie and blueberry crumble -- and both were still presentable and tasty for lunch after after 25 and dinner after 30 miles.

In the morning, they all caught a bus back to Boston, where they had one last lunch together -- burgers at Five Guys!  Everyone made sure to trade email addresses and phone numbers before they parted ways.  We're thrilled that another group had such a great trip where they accomplished a lot, learned a lot, and had tons of fun.

Maine Coast Trek Winding Down

A rainy morning got the Maine Coast Trekkers on the road early to say goodbye to beautiful Acadia National Park yesterday.  They biked 26 miles before lunch, the group's top early mileage for the entire trip.  They found lunch at the biggest Walmart any of them had ever seen and did a little window-shopping for guns to introduce Samuel, a Trekker who hails from France, to that aspect of American culture.  They had lots of time to swim and take some long, hot showers when they got to their campsite and pulled out the stops for their last night cooking together to make "some crazy creative Sloppy Joes."

Today, they're biking to Bangor -- with stops along the way for back rubs and baked goods.  One more night, and then the Trekkers will meet up with their families to start sharing stories of their biking adventure!

Maine Coast Trekkers Get Ready to Summit Cadillac Mountain

Our Maine Coast Trekkers went an entire 24 hours without biking, but they found more than enough to keep themselves busy.  They did some laundry, popped out to explore downtown Bar Harbor, then had lunch and played hacky sack on the village green.  In the afternoon, they went swimming at Sand Beach. For dinner, they gave themselves a night off from cooking and went out for pizza, then enjoyed an ImprovAcadia show.

Tomorrow, they're hoping for good sunrise weather -- everyone's ready to bike Cadillac Mountain before sunrise, then coast back down to Blackwood Campground for breakfast burritos.
There's essentially no cell reception in the park, so leaders Andy and Carol are in the same tech-free environment as the teenagers in the group.  They're going retro, using paper maps and asking strangers where to find the best spots in the park.

One more night camping out, then a cozy night at a hotel in Bangor, and this group's Trek will be finished!  They're going to squeeze everything they can out of it.

Maine Coast Trek Reaches Acadia National Park

Today, the Maine Coast Trekkers are headed for Blackwoods Campground, where they'll stay for three nights, hiking through beautiful Acadia National Park.

They've had a mostly smooth ride, with only minor stops for repairs.  Here, the Trekkers are getting a lesson on how to oil a chain from leader Andy:

After their interlude in Acadia, the group has only a couple more biking days before it'll be time to head back to Boston, where their journey began.

New England Shore Trek's Last Day

The New England Shore group closed out its Trek with loads of sun and sand!  They went swimming in the ocean, buried each other in the sand, ate lunch on the beach, and of course. . .

They biked!  They put a total of more than 330 miles behind them on this trip -- quite an accomplishment!  Today, they're reuniting with their parents, some in Boston and some in NYC, to tell them all about their adventure.

It sounds like everyone had a fantastic trip.  Enjoy the last bit of your summer, New England Shore crew, and keep biking!

Lake Ontario Trek Completes 600+ Mile Journey

The Lake Ontario Trekkers made it back to Buffalo, NY, where, three weeks ago, they started their adventure.  In all, they biked more than 600 miles together!

They spent their last night in the posh Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Buffalo and, yesterday, enjoyed a lazy morning with brunch at Betty's Restaurant -- breakfast burritos, French toast, and steak and eggs.  The day's highlight (no pun intended) was looking out over the city, Lake Erie, and the mists of Niagara Falls from Buffalo City Hall's observation deck.

Goodbyes are always difficult, but several Trekkers from this group are already talking about getting back together next year on our Across America route!

Maine Coast Trekkers Cycle North Towards Acadia

Yesterday was the longest day our Trekkers had biking up the Maine Coast, and they hope it will also end up being their hilliest day. In the morning, they visited Bowdoin College.  It started to rain as they headed out, but they found a family homestead where they could have lunch.

By the time they reached their destination for the day, Duck Puddle Campground, a jam band concert was in full swing! With covers of songs by Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, and The Who in the background, they cooked some delicious pesto chicken with rice and veggies for dinner.

They're just over halfway through their Trek!
