New York-Montreal Trekkers Bike up the Hudson River Bikeway

After taking the train in NYC and arriving at Dobbs Ferry, we went over some biking basics and got on the road. We enjoyed some ice cream and ate lunch in a park very close to Dobbs Ferry, as we hadn't gotten into full stride yet. We were slowed down by a few flat tires, but the morale stayed high as we slowly chugged along to Croton Point. When we arrived at the campgrounds at Croton Point we found a wonderful swimming area which we enjoyed and cooled off in. The water was fantastic! After swimming we headed to our campsite, set up our tents, and began to cook our sesame chicken stir fry dinner as the sun went down, and got ready for our next big day of cycling!

New England Shore Trek Crosses the Rhode Island / Massachusetts Border

Today, we woke up relishing our last moments in the hotel beds of the Providence Marriott. Soon, after packing up our bikes and heading downstairs, the Trekkers set off in search of breakfast! A quick trip for bagels, peanut butter and yogurt led to us enjoying a nice meal on the grass. We then headed off to our 23 mile ride over the Rhode Island/Massachusetts border into Assonet! The ride was eventful, with refreshing rainstorms, an extended break at Cumberland Farms, and BRIDGES!!!!! For lunch, we had chill zones, chicken tenders and hot dogs, and a lot of iced coffee. We picked up sammiches and salads for dinner and continued our ride into the cool, crisp, mystical water pouring from the sky. After arriving at our campsite we took in the view of deep forests and ponds as we sent up tents and enjoyed our meals. After dinner we put on our pjs and set out to explore the campsite where we watched the sun go down and
shared funny stories and hopes for the trip to come. Yotam still isn't in his pjs. Quotes of the day: "I have a more European palette" "I'm like hey what's up hello" "hand signals" -- Trekkers Lauren, Hazel, Willem and Yotam

Lake Ontario Trekkers By-pass Toronto Sprawl

We took the train out of Toronto instead of biking the 50 miles to Darlington Provincial park. We got to the campground very early because of the reduced mileage and luckily we were able to set up camp before the rain started. It rained on and off for the rest of the afternoon/evening but we were afforded a break to make quesadillas for dinner accompanied by Jake's wonderful Guacamole! Hopefully the rain will let up soon!

New England Shore Trekkers Enjoy Newport, RI

Natural Campsite in Newport, RI
Today we started the day off waking up to a beautiful day on Block Island. Breaking from the usual routine, we got straight on our bikes without breakfast and headed straight to the beach with our gear packed and ready for the day ahead. At the beach, some decided to take a frigid dip while others prepared bagels. After everybody was full and ready to go, most of the group headed to the center of town where we met up with Sarah and Yotam, as they had been getting Yotam's bike repaired. Then we all headed over to the ferry for a journey from the island to the mainland. Our destination was Newport, Rhode Island. Once the bikes were carted off of the boat we headed to our new campsite in a meadow of a generous friend's property. Everybody unpacked their gear and set up the tents and played some very thought provoking games. Afterwards, everyone hopped on their bikes to head into the center of town for a bit of shopping free time. On the way we encountered many Victorian era mansions. In town everybody enjoyed fudge and a good hour of window shopping. Then the days cooks, Lauren, Andrea, and Adam went food shopping as the days cleaning crew hung out. Then after an unfortunate loss of whipped cream, we biked back to the campsite and got ready for a tasty dinner of chili and delightful dessert of hot cookies with whipped cream. With the moon shining above us we told stories and enjoyed another evening together.

Home Cooked Dinner by John's Aunt BJ for Across America Trekkers

7/21- We set out this morning with a mission: to make it to Gillette, WY to enjoy a hearty dinner with John's family! We rode over seemingly endless rolling hills, and stopped in Spotted Horse (population: 2!) for lunch. There we encountered a solo cyclist going west on a cross country ride who hailed from Toronto and was headed towards the Oregon coast, who waved us onward with promises of flat roads ahead. We arrived safely in Gillette, after quite a few hills, where we were graciously hosted by John's Aunt BJ and Uncle Jay.Tomorrow we make for the Black Hills of South Dakota! Life is good and we've got 1,300 miles under our belts to feel proud of.
We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and spent the evening looking at maps and sharing stories, while eating brownies and vanilla over cream.

Lake Ontario Trekkers Bike Along the Niagara River to the Falls

Today Teen Treks team Lake Ontario had a fantastic first day! The group met up in Front Park by the Peace Bridge in Buffalo and got to know each other by playing ice breaker games. Then we hit the road and crossed the bridge to Canada and rode up the Niagara Parkway towards Niagara Falls. We stopped for lunch and swimming in the river on our way. While looking for water we happened upon a lovely historical museum right before we got to Chippewa. The museum documented rural life in Ontario including muskets, a working old telephone switch board, and old bicycles including a penny-fathering! Back on the road again we were soon in for another wonderful surprise right across from the supermarket, we stopped at a lemonade stand. The proprietor of the stand, Gram, was a very good salesman and wanted to get a picture with the group. We ended up sharing our ice cream with him after we went food shopping. We rode on stopping at Niagara Falls briefly before heading over to the hostel to unpack. Kyle and Claire cooked a wonderful dinner of Buffalo Mac and Cheese! We then went to explore Clifton Hill briefly before heading back for bed. What a busy first day!

Cape Cod Trekkers on Martha's Vineyard

We made it to Martha's Vineyard today!
A short, late morning bike ride to the steamship authority brought us from our campsite in Falmouth to the ferry awaiting departure. Arriving a few minutes early, we stopped for ice cream, and we mixed and matched flavors to our personal preferences.
We loaded our bikes into the lower cargo area of the massive ferry, and headed to the upper decks, as we started across the Vineyard Sound.
Arriving in Martha's Vineyard, the port was packed with people, and fleets of anchored sailboats welcomed our arrival. We stopped at a grocery store around the corner to purchase our food for the next day. We had to resupply nearly all of our rations, so our bikes were filled as we rode another short distance into camp, at the Martha's Vineyard Family Campground.
When we reached the grounds, we came upon a beautiful sight - our cabin for the next few nights! ...a nice break from setting up our tents. A few of us wandered the grounds and then we unpacked our gear. In our cabin, we even have a mini fridge and a grill, so we stored our perishables, and decided to treat ourselves in true Vineyard style - by exploring Vineyard Haven and having a nice dinner out at the Blue Canoe Waterfront Grill. We had cheeseburgers, salmon and clam chowder above a small harbor, and we watched the famous Black Dog Cafe sailboat hoist its sails and head out to sea.
After a rather ritzy dinner, we explored some of the town and checked out some small gift and boutique shops.
We wandered the main street until about 8:00 p.m., when we were to meet up for a ghost walk around town. Our guide, affiliated with the town's newspaper, carried a lantern and led us around former ship Captains' homes, and down to the water, and up to an old graveyard. We learned some local history, while hearing some scary stories, and some of us even caught energy orbs in photos we took of the graveyard. Though some of us are believers, and others skeptics, the tour was a spooky way to get a taste of the area's rich seafaring history.
