New England Shore Trekkers Trek Through the Newport Mansions

Today, as the sun filtered through the trees into our tent flaps, we awoke and ate oatmeal and grapes on the meadow grass. As Elazar's guitar music set the mood for the relaxed day, we packed up and set out for our tour around the Breakers, one of the most famous mansions in Newport. After taking a tour, making our bi-weekly human pyramid and lounging around in the large seaside yard, we started our hike along the Cliff Walk towards the beach. A casual lunch on the rocks and a long walk alongside the cliffs allowed for lots of words games and family bonding. After climbing over rocks and through tunnels, we reached the long awaited beach and jumped into the cold water and tanned in the sand. After a long walk back to the bikes and a trip to Stop and Shop, we returned to the meadow to make a dinner of burgers and salad. To finish off the relaxed day, we met up with our new Newport friends for smores and funny stories as the sun went down.--Written by Lauren

New England Shore Trekkers Enjoy Newport, RI

Natural Campsite in Newport, RI
Today we started the day off waking up to a beautiful day on Block Island. Breaking from the usual routine, we got straight on our bikes without breakfast and headed straight to the beach with our gear packed and ready for the day ahead. At the beach, some decided to take a frigid dip while others prepared bagels. After everybody was full and ready to go, most of the group headed to the center of town where we met up with Sarah and Yotam, as they had been getting Yotam's bike repaired. Then we all headed over to the ferry for a journey from the island to the mainland. Our destination was Newport, Rhode Island. Once the bikes were carted off of the boat we headed to our new campsite in a meadow of a generous friend's property. Everybody unpacked their gear and set up the tents and played some very thought provoking games. Afterwards, everyone hopped on their bikes to head into the center of town for a bit of shopping free time. On the way we encountered many Victorian era mansions. In town everybody enjoyed fudge and a good hour of window shopping. Then the days cooks, Lauren, Andrea, and Adam went food shopping as the days cleaning crew hung out. Then after an unfortunate loss of whipped cream, we biked back to the campsite and got ready for a tasty dinner of chili and delightful dessert of hot cookies with whipped cream. With the moon shining above us we told stories and enjoyed another evening together.
